Wintergreen, however is a very effective oil in the treatment of arthritic complaints and is an active ingredient in the renowned Olbas Oil. However it contains some potentially dangerous constituents like formaldehyde and gaultheriline. There is a safer alternative which does everything that natural Wintergreen can do with less risk of damage, Synthetic Wintergreen Oil (Methyl salicylate) which is used by advocates to control pain, inflammation, general joint pain, lumbago, sciatica, neuralgia, myalgia and muscle stiffness.
It is absorbed through the skin and is applied in liniments and ointments for the relief of pain in rheumatic conditions. Methyl salicylate is a topically applied drug that has non-steroidal anti-inflammatory effects similar to aspirin.  Rugby players have been known to slap it on neat for painful bruises but this is not recommended for us lesser mortals.  Methyl salicylate is probably toxic & irritant,  but infinitely safer than using the natural Wintergreen Oil or natural Yellow Birch Oil.
Do not use if pregnant.
Used extensively by bee keepers with Patchouli and Tea Tree.
